Beyond Ourselves, the community service organization of the Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association, meets the third Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m. at the PGICA. Visitors are always welcome at our meetings.
In March, 2012 a group of caring residents of the Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association decided to form an organization with the only mission: to serve others in the community. They felt a need for a structured organization to continue their efforts.
At the beginning Beyond Ourselves decided to focus on three different missions. The first interest is for the homeless of Charlotte County. Beyond Ourselves has been active With the Homeless Coalition of Charlotte County, serving meals, collecting food, and sponsoring the annual “Shoebox Event.” This event, held in November, collected over 200 filled shoeboxes each year. These boxes are filled with personal toiletry items, and given as gifts to residents of the Homeless Coalition.
The second concern is for the wildlife in the beautiful environment of Charlotte Harbor. The Beyond Ourselves members got together with the Peace River wildlife center to educate others and to help support the wildlife center.
The third mission is to help the children of Charlotte County.
The 2015 “Share the love for the kids" Home Tour was a major fundraiser for Beyond Ourselves, which benefitted New Operation Cooper St., Inc. and the Back Pack Kidz program. The tour of 6 homes and 3 gardens provided critical funds for both of these organizations.
$40,000.00 was raised for these organizations in 2015 with another $123,500 raised in the past. Beyond Ourselves has certainly made a difference for the children of charlotte county.
The 2016 Home Tour is in the planning stages and will be held January 30, 2016.
